NORTH CAROLINA

Motorcycles are assumed to have been included under motor vehicles in the 1907 state law requiring registration in Guilford, Wake and Wayne counties; however no motorcycle registrations have been confirmed in the 1907-09 era.  The 1909 state law specifically excluded motorcycles from registration but the state required the registration of them anyway.  For further details on this unusual situation, please refer to the North Carolina Pre-state State page.

State-issued motorcycle plates were first issued in 1913 to expire on June 30, 1914.  A 1914 plate #333 is known.  Since the 1913 state law provided for motorcycle registration effective April 1, 1913, there is speculation that a 1913 dated motorcycle plate might also have been issued for use up through June 30, 1913.  If so, we expect that fewer than 50 would have been issued, making any nearly impossible to find today.
